International Symposium on Data Science Frontier – Opening Ceremony and Machine Learning and AI Session
Organised by the Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Insurance (MSI), the International Symposium on Data Science Frontier was successfully held from 8 to 10 July 2026 at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong, spotlighting cutting-edge advancements in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Professor Choy Siu Kai, Head of MSI, warmly welcomed the invited guests at the opening ceremony. Subsequently, Dr. Siu Chi Chung, Associate Head of MSI, hosted the Machine Learning and AI Session. Four distinguished academics delivered insightful presentations as follows:
- Professor Alan Wee Chung Liew, Professor of Griffith University, kicked off with “Trustworthy AI for Critical Systems and Health Innovation”
- Professor Chee Peng Lim, Professor of Swinburne University of Technology, presented “Computational Intelligence-based Systems: Advances and Applications”
- Professor Keming Yu, Professor of Brunel University, delivered “Semi-Supervised Learning for Extremile Regression”
- Professor Thomas Lee, Professor of the University of California, Davis shared his expertise on “Learning from Delayed Feedback: Bandits and Real-World Decision Making”
Dr. Benson Lam, Associate Professor of MSI and convenor of the symposium, hosted the Open Discussion and insightful dialogues among the experts were a major highlight of the symposium.
This symposium is supported by a grant from the Research Grant Council of the HKSAR, China (UGC/IIDS14/P01/25).

Professor Thomas Lee of the University of California, Davis, focused on the multi-armed bandit framework.
