International Symposium on Data Science Frontier – Economics and Finance Session

Organised by the Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Insurance (MSI), the International Symposium on Data Science Frontier was successfully held from 8 to 10 July 2026 at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong, spotlighting cutting-edge advancements in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.

Professor Choy Siu Kai, Head of MSI, and Dr. Siu Chi Chung, Associate Head of MSI, warmly welcomed the invited guests joining the Economics and Finance Session. Three distinguished academics delivered insightful presentations as follows:

  • Professor Zhijie Xiao, Professor of Boston College, kicked off with “Functional Dynamics in Economic and Financial Time Series”.
  • Professor Dan Zhu, Professor of Monash University, presented “Structural Macroeconomics with Daily Data: A Matrix-Free Mixed-Frequency VAR Approach”
  • Ping Chen, Associate Professor of the University of Melbourne, shared her expertise on “Data-Driven Pandemic Risk Management: Integrating Vaccination Optimisation and Catastrophe Bond Design via Neural Networks”

Subsequently, Dr. Benson Lam, Associate Professor of MSI and convenor of the symposium, hosted the Open Discussion and rewarding dialogues enriched the session.

This symposium is supported by a grant from the Research Grant Council of the HKSAR, China (UGC/IIDS14/P01/25).

Professor Zhijie Xiao of Boston College delivered the keynote presentation.

Professor Dan Zhu of Monash University discussed a matrix-free mixed-frequency VAR approach.

Dr. Ping Chen of the University of Melbourne delivered an engaging presentation on data-driven pandemic risk management.

Dr. Siu Chi Chung, Associate Head of MSI, presented souvenirs to the speakers.

Dr. Benson Lam, Associate Professor of MSI and convenor of the symposium, discussed the impact of Artificial Intelligence with the speakers.
