[Update] BSc-DSBI Team Advances to Finals of EY Open Science Data Challenge 2024

We are proud to share with you the good news that our team of BSc-DSBI Year 3 students, comprising of Chan Ka Fai (Left), Sin King Hin (Middle), and Lau Ngai Sang (Right), has accomplished something truly remarkable. They have been chosen as one of the top 3 finalists in the prestigious EY Open Science Data Challenge 2024 . This global competition brings together participants from around the world to solve pressing environmental problems using data-analytic techniques. This achievement is a testament to their hard work and dedication. For more information about the challenge, please visit https://challenge.ey.com/2024.

The competition consisted of three phases. In Phase 1, participating teams were tasked with developing an AI model to detect “damaged” and “undamaged” coastal infrastructure at a site affected by Hurricane Maria. Phase 1 was concluded with a selection of top 10 teams as the semi-finalists for Phase 2. Our BSc-DSBI team utilized the YOLO model to analyze satellite images and demonstrated exceptional performance. Out of more than 1,800 teams, our team secured an impressive eighth position, surpassing teams from renowned institutions such as the University of Oxford, Kyoto University, and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

Moving on to Phase 2, our BSc-DSBI team prepared a comprehensive proposal outlining the implementation of their Phase 1 model by local beneficiaries. This proposal covers the assessment of coastal infrastructural damages, socioeconomic impact, and climate change risk for future storms. In Phase 2, only the top 3 teams were selected as finalists for Phase 3. Our team successfully emerged as one of the top 3 finalists, earning them the opportunity to present their work at the 2024 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium in Phase 3, which will take place from 7 to 12 July 2024 in Athens, Greece. For more information about the Symposium, please visit https://www.2024.ieeeigarss.org/.

Please join us to congratulate our BSc-DSBI team on a job well done, and we wish them success in Phase 3 of the competition.
