RGA, Actuarial Intern

A.S. Watson Group Data Scientist Intern

In this internship, my responsibility is to build dashboard for business usage, assist in data science project, suggest solutions and enhance the development of Big data platform. I worked in various project in the Big Data Team, from dashboard building, web scrapping, doing data research to select data source for the platform, building recommendation system for customer. During the process, I learn a lot though cooperation and guidance from my colleagues for example the process of project management the coding style for effective team cooperation, how to deal with huge volume of data, build up an efficient development platform, version control and how to cope with different programming language. It is a fruitful experience to me, and I would keep on learning from my colleagues in my extended part-time intern period.

Census and Statistics Department, HKSAR Professional Attachment Programme, Trade Analysis Branch

The working experience through this programme has helped me a lot because of these reasons: First, from this programme, I can have the opportunity to understand the job duties of a statistician and a statistical assistant / statistical officer by listening to the experience from the colleagues. In addition, the colleagues have talked about the career path of this job, so I can know more about the development and thus to decide which path is better according to my own personality. Second, the supervisors have taught us some useful ideas that have not been taught in lessons, for example, do not just focus on the data but try to understand what those data really mean and how to analyze them; there may be no best option to analyze the data in reality as the data may be affected by many different variables which makes it hard to draw conclusion. Third, we are taught that we need to find out the main topic we want to deliver from the data we collect but not just type all data / information for the audience, which is different from school as in school the topics are usually set by teachers. I think it is very important for future career.

DBS Bank (Hong Kong) Limited Intern, Consumer Banking Operations

Tertiary market operation team focus on corporate action on stock market, such as calculating dividend and communicating with customer. The greatest challenge of my position is to ensure the accuracy of the output remain high. Error is not allowed, especially in banking industry, as the whole team will be affected by one’s effort. To be responsible, doing process review on my work and double or even triple checking my working is necessary.

Insurance Authority

The time I spent in the Insurance Authority was a great opportunity for me to widen my eyesight about the insurance industry. I was able to know more about the industry from a regulator’s perspective, which was a very precious experience. This experience has deepened my understanding towards the Insurance industry and helped me throughout the remaining school years.

Zurich Services Hong Kong Limited, Finance Life Actuarial Department

My first actuarial internship was at Zurich Services Hong Kong Limited, a Switzerland-based global insurer, during the first half year of 2020. Unlike my previous experience at the Insurance Authority (IA), Zurich was a microscopic world as I worked in a sub team of reporting under Finance Life Actuarial department that cultivated my knowledge on reporting standard, both locally to the Insurance Authority and internationally (IFRS). I was grateful and satisfied that I had an opportunity to get a touch on the actual doings of a reporting actuarial team such as running prophet data conversion system, grouping policies in a model point, consolidating datum of reinsurance accounts and participating in some ad-hoc tasks like setting up extra reserve for COVID-19 and revamping prophet codes to cater a new product of a new subsidiary of Zurich.

FWD Life Insurance Company (Bermuda) Limited

What I have learnt from this internship is how to use Prophet, such as model running and spreadsheet checking to see if there is any error inside. I have also used the skills learnt from school such as Excel formulae, VBA and some actuarial skills in Excel. I think these skills are important to be an actuary. My supervisor gave me a lot of tasks which were quite difficult for me. Although I had spent much time to read and understand, I could handle them eventually. There are three important things to be an intern: be patient, be careful and ask supervisor for help if facing any problem.

FTLife Insurance Company Limited

In the internship scheme, I have gained experience by working in the Asset and Liability Management team. My job responsibility is to do breakdown of products with their asset share and finish proofreading work. This is a valuable opportunity for me because not only I become more familiar with making use of excel formulas, but also, I can know more about how the department operates, the useful ways and ideas to finish tasks, the information related to the industry as well as the future career path through communicating with my colleagues.
