BSc-DSBI Students entered top 10 in EY Open Science Data Challenge 2024

Congratulations to our Year-3 BSc-DSBI students Chan Ka Fai (Left), Sin King Hin (Middle), and Lau Ngai Sang (Right). They have been selected as one of the 10 semi-finalists in the prestigious EY Open Science Data Challenge 2024. This is a remarkable achievement considering the fierce competition involved.

The competition consists of three phases, and in the initial phase, participating teams were tasked with developing an AI model to detect “damaged” and “undamaged” coastal infrastructure at a site affected by Hurricane Maria. Leveraging the YOLO model to analyze satellite images, our DSBI team demonstrated exceptional performance. Their model outperformed over 1,800 teams, securing an impressive eighth position. They defeated renowned institutions such as the University of Oxford, Kyoto University, and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

Currently, our DSBI team is dedicating their efforts to prepare a comprehensive business proposal for the second phase of the competition. This phase poses a significant challenge as it involves competing against teams from various countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and more. Advancing to the final phase would provide the team with an incredible opportunity to present their work in Athens, Greece.

We are immensely proud of our DSBI team’s accomplishments thus far and remain optimistic about their potential success in the forthcoming phases of the competition.

Please join us in wishing them the best of luck as they continue to showcase their expertise and dedication on the global stage. Let’s congratulate on their achievements altogether. Good job!
